- How I Disconnected From Social Media For A Day – And Survived!

A few days ago I realized that I had not taken a complete day off for over two months. A large project that originally was supposed to take four weeks had stretched out to over twice that, due to client changes and additions. This created a domino effect with my other projects, but it didn’t seem fair to delay other clients in order to please the one. So suddenly I found myself juggling quite a few projects at once and failing to find nearly enough sleep or time away from the computer. Add to the mix the recent building of the bkmacdaddy online social media presence using Twitter, Facebook and other accounts with daily updates and the icing on the cake of the new addition of this blog and the added responsibility of producing regular posts. What was I thinking?!?
- MacDaddy Links of the Week – 072509

It’s that time again, boys and girls! These are the links that I have bookmarked this week for my own personal use. I don’t claim them to be the best of the week – but they are what I am using and rereading and keeping for future use. So maybe there are some in here for you too!
- How Twitter Reminded Us That People – Not Numbers – Are What Matter + My Weekly Recommendations

This morning as I was going through my routine of catching up on RSS feeds and all the latest design, social media and tech news, I came across the story from Mashable that explained how Twitter decided to clean up spam and bot accounts last night. The article revealed how the result for most Twitter users would be a drop in follower count. Like most who read it, I quickly put down my coffee and checked my own statistics. I have to admit I was shocked and even disappointed to see that overnight I dropped from over 5,200 followers down to the 4,700 range! My initial frustration evaporated quickly though, when I thought about the fact that the 500 or so accounts that had been deleted from my numbers were actually programs or autofollows or other garbage that truly were not of any interest to me anyway. This got me thinking yet again about the whole numbers game most of us tend to get caught up in with our social media accounts and how we like to achieve milestones and statistics and such.
- How I Keep Up With The Thousands I Follow on Twitter + My Weekly Recommendations of People to Follow

This morning as I was going through my ritual email and Twitter catchups, I came across a questions from a new friend on Twitter named Liz Stroud (@liz2point0). Liz asked: “How do you keep up with thousands of people to follow??? Seiously!” So I thought, why not answer the question in today’s #FollowFriday blog post along with my weekly recommendations of people to follow on Twitter.
- My Weekly Recommendations of People To Follow On Twitter – July 10, 2009

I REALLY wanted to write an accompanying article giving some more tidbits and tips and insights into Twitter that I’ve learned, but somehow my days this week only had 24 hours in them. Did anyone else have that problem? I’m drafting a petition for more hours in the day. Let me know if you would be willing to add your signature. So instead this week I am simply going straight to a new compilation of people I follow on Twitter.
- Challenging Integrity: Personal and Professional Branding

With social media marketing becoming a household term – even its own well-known acronym (SMM) – and “branding” becoming a concept that even teenagers grasp, I have been thinking a lot lately about the challenges that come from having so much of my life visible online. All three of my kids have Facebook pages, MySpace pages, email accounts and more. My wife and I work diligently to monitor their activity and ensure their safety, and we discuss with them the potential dangers of revealing “too much”. Specifically we have outlawed school names, street addresses, and other items that might give the wrong people clues to their whereabouts or schedules. I think we would all agree that children sharing any personal information online is a dangerous proposition. But what about adults? How much is “too much” for you and me?
