All The MacDaddy Links In One Place – Updated All Day Long!!!

***UPDATE 08/13/09: Now the links are SEARCHABLE! Check it out!

Since I have been on Twitter I have accumulated a following by not only interacting with the many new friends and connections I have made, but also by sharing a continuous supply of links to resources for web and graphic design, SEO, social media and more. As I have refined this link-sharing process over time, I have been trying to find alternative ways to provide the links for those that may want access or feel they may be missing some of what I share. One of the ways I do this is by organizing my Delicious bookmarks each week and posting the MacDaddy Links of the Week. However, those links are limited to only the few that I actually bookmark in my own personal Delicious account – a small sampling of the 150+ links I tweet each day.

I have had some new followers on Twitter communicate with me that they want all of the links I share but following me and my continuous stream of links fills up their Twitter page to the point that they are unable to read anyone else’s tweets. I completely understand their frustration, especially for those that only follow a few people or are new and haven’t figured out how to use all the various apps and tools that can enhance and shape their Twitter experience to better suit their needs. Since my goal on Twitter is not to gain the largest following, but to interact, learn, connect and share, it became a concern of mine to provide a way for those that value the links I share to be able to still access and browse through them, even if they don’t choose to follow me.

So a few weeks ago, when @elliottcarlson started following me and immediately expressed concern about the amount of tweets I was flooding him with, he offered to write a script that could be used to dynamically store all of the links I tweet in a database and display them on my site. Within a day or so it was done and then I spent the few spare minutes I’ve had over the past weeks integrating it into a page on bkmacdaddy.com.

You may ask, “Why can’t I just go to the bkmacdaddy Twitter page and read your tweets there? Isn’t this the same thing?” While this links page is similar, it does not have any of the conversational tweets included. It is strictly links. So that is a distinct difference from my Twitter page, because I tend to converse with others on Twitter plus thank every single person who retweets anything I post. If you truly want the links, all the links and nothing but the links, then this is the way for you to get ‘em. It is generated dynamically so every time you refresh the page you get the most recent tweeted links!

So here’s the deal. I realize I may lose followers because they don’t have to follow me anymore to get all the links I tweet. I’m okay with that, because I am most interested in providing services for others and interacting. That said, I am going to start off by offering this links page without adding  direct access to it via the navigation menus on the site. Call it an experiment. Instead I would humbly request that if you appreciate this service, please help me out by doing at least one, if not all, of the following:

Tweet this blog post to all your followers (use the ReTweet button to the right)

Digg the links page once you’re on it (Digg button provided)

Bookmark the links page to Delicious or any other services you may use

Post about it anywhere you so desire (Facebook or your own blog would be nice)

Comment on this blog post with your thoughts, reaction, suggestions, or whatever!

I bookmarked your new links page in my Delicious collection.

Yes, I like the conversation on Twitter, too! It’s a way to connect on a human level, not just technically or with design.

I am still admiring your links page. So should be asking Elliot Carson how he did this? Twitter API? How does it know not to include a tweet about the orthodontist – only include if there is a http:// in the link and doesn’t begin with an @?

An inquiring mind would like to know. I wrote a little script for Recent Tweets for my own site, but I like this idea of a links page.

I’m not a coder, so I can’t go into much details on how, but I will say it has more to do with how I Tweet as opposed to some other form of detection.

Glad you like it! I need to figure out how to make it searchable too. In my spare time! :)

    Maybe Google custom search?

I can understand the “in your spare time” – I tend to get side-tracked by these interesting problems!

I actually tried Google custom search but it apparently doesn’t search the dynamically displayed links. So I need database search that can then display. I have a tutorial on it that I plan to try soon. We shall see…

Looking forward to seeing whatever you do. I guess this means your tweets will have to go into a database? (I am still trying to figure out the coding in my head even if you didn’t do the code part).

This is awesome Brian! I’ve been so busy getting ready for the semester to start next week that I haven’t had much time for the news or to retweet your great links lately. All is not lost, thanks to you. Looking forward to that tutorial someday…
I already bookmarked this in delicious and will definitely tweet it (to any followers I have left, considering my somewhat inactive status of late).

Oops, as if I’m the only Becky in the world. Not.

Brian, I gotta say I love this! Very cool way to share all the links you post and keep them fresh while driving traffic to the site. Kudos to @elliottcarlson for writing the script for you.

I for one love your links on twitter and the conversation. I won’t follow someone who only tweets links because it takes the “social” out of social sites.

I have already dugg it and will keep an eye on the progress. I’m intrigued! Plus, it is a great source of linkage I might miss if I am not online.

    You, my man, ROCK! ;)

Love it mate, good addition to your site and I am loving the new search facility on there. Will have to chat with you about how you did this at somepoint.

Hope you are well, and working hard as always :)
