what we do

Since 1995, bkmacdaddy designs has specialized in creative custom websites and graphic design. It started out as a way to generate some additional income on the side, focusing on church, ministry and non-profit organizations who could not typically afford more established designers. By offering professional-quality web and graphic design services at unusually affordable prices, bkmacdaddy designs filled a niche need and the business was born. As the portfolio and experience grew, so did the skills, knowledge and client base. Soon it was time to make bkmacdaddy designs a full-time business and we haven’t looked back since.

Throughout the evolution of the business, we have strived to stay abreast of all current technologies, programming languages, trends and software. Today the majority of our clients are utilizing WordPress as a content management system for their websites, so we now specialize in building custom WordPress websites, while still providing other options for those that prefer them. who we areback to the top

Although there is definitely a group effort in most projects, the fact is that bkmacdaddy designs is a one-man web and graphic design studio owned and operated by me, Brian McDaniel. That said, I would be remiss to neglect to mention the others involved. Primarily, my wife Candace is an integral part of every process, as a sounding board, a second pair of eyes, an alternative opinion and an amazing design sense. She is a photographer, artist, stylist and creative soul who always plays a role in the bkmacdaddy designs process. On occasion the “we” includes outsourcing to developers for more complex programming that goes beyond the norm or my capabilities.

a brief bio

I could easily write what would likely be an entertaining book about my adventures on this journey through life so far, but that’s for another time and place. Instead, here’s an extremely summarized version for those who are interested.

I grew up in the city of San Francisco, son and grandson of Southern Baptist pastors. I spent most of my youth rebelling against my religious upbringing, while enjoying reading, drawing and music. My family moved to Honolulu, HI, in the middle of my senior year in high school, where I went straight from graduation into a locally successful nightclub band, utilizing my singing voice and classical piano training on the keyboards. While touring with my band over the next few years, I met the love of my life on the tiny island of Guam, and we were married 8 months to the day from when we met, on May 14, 1989.

A week after we married we moved back to San Francisco with very little in our pockets but a strong desire to explore our new life together and the world. We worked a number of jobs over the next few years and fell deeply in love with the city. 3 years later we moved to the East Bay suburbs when our first child was born. That same year I became a kidney donor to save my brother from a lifetime of dialysis. It was quite a year.

During that year we began re-exploring religion, and soon I became an ordained Southern Baptist pastor. Over the next 10 years we added two more children to our family and I went into full-time ministry. Along the way we bought our first personal computer, and my interest in web design was born. I began designing and developing websites for churches, ministries, and other non-profit organizations, generating additional income for our growing family and supplementing the feeble salary of a pastor.

Fast forward to 2006, when my wife and I became disillusioned with the modern institution of religion and decided to walk away from everything we had been teaching and practicing for the past decade. In what became a very painful, difficult, yet eventually fulfilling life change, we packed up and moved our family back to Honolulu, attempting to put significant distance between ourselves and the church life we had lived. Two years later we decided to make another move and took our family to Tallahassee, Florida, where bkmacdaddy designs became a full-time business. I started taking on clients from all over the world and in a variety of interests, including non-profits, political candidates, medical fields, and small businesses. At the same time I started utilizing social media to market the business, and it exploded. I started writing for Freelance Folder as well as on my own blog with wonderful response.

In 2010 we realized we needed to get back to California and made the third move in four years. Because of the nature of the business, it was relatively simple to maintain and continue growing the client base in the new location.

Throughout its existence, bkmacdaddy designs has focused on providing personal and passion-driven services to each of our clients, treating others the way we want to be treated and developing long-term relationships because of our approach. We strive to be the best experience our clients have working with a web and graphic designer, and it has become our trademark, as you can see by reading our client testimonials. Today we continue the tradition, and look forward to each new project’s challenges, opportunities and personalities. We love what we do, and that is all we have ever wanted. It shows in our work and it translates into satisfied and happy clients.

how we do itback to the top

The process of each project is unique, yet there are several key components that are almost always included. Here is a basic outline of how we operate:

  • We start with an initial discussion of the project via email, phone and/or Skype. This enables us to catch the client’s vision and an overall feel for what the project will entail.
  • Next we provide a written questionnaire to get a more in-depth view of the project and the client.
  • Once the questionnaire is completed, a written proposal and contract is delivered with itemized and binding pricing.
  • When the signed contract and initial deposit (usually 50%) is received, the work begins.
  • Depending on the contract specifications, we usually provide up to 3 mockups of the project’s design with up to 3 revisions on the chosen mockup.
  • Once the mockup is approved, the final design is developed and produced.
  • When the final product is presented and accepted, the remaining balance is due and the client takes ownership of all materials. For websites, training is provided and included at this point, finally handing over the reins to the client.
  • The entire process can take anywhere from 1-8 weeks.

We use the most current software programs and technologies available. Right now we are using Adobe’s Creative Suite 5.5 for most of the work, primarily utilizing Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. All work is done on a Dell XPS computer with Intel i7 processor and three 24″ monitors. When necessary we also use our iPad and mobile phones for testing.

what we chargeback to the top

Every single project is priced on a per-project basis, but here is a general idea of what we charge for most of the things we do:

Custom WordPress Websites
$1500 for a completely custom site with basic functionality, including installation, setup, Google Analytics, written administration instructions and up to one hour of training over the phone. Prices go up from there depending on the functionalities needed (e-commerce, membership, data-capture, forum, advertising, social media integration, customizing plugins, etc.) Most WordPress websites we design and build are in the $2500-$3500 range.

Other Custom Websites
The price range here is so wide it’s difficult to summarize. Pricing is dependent on the needs of the project and the time involved. Over 90% of our clients that start here usually end up getting a WordPress website instead because of its ease of use for the client and the pricing model we use.

Logo Design
$500 is the starting rate, with increases depending upon the project and its complexity.

Social Media
Facebook Page Tabs/Apps: start at $250.
Twitter Profile Backgrounds: start at $75.
YouTube Customizations: start at $100.

Miscellaneous
All other work is charged on an hourly basis at the rate of $75 per hour. In most cases the client is provided with a total project estimate or range based on this hourly rate.
